Why do Indian Defence Services use Maruti Gypsy instead of other powerful SUVs?

It is true that Maruti Gypsy is not powerful nowadays. But when the military started using the Maruti Gypsy in 1991, it was the most powerful SUV in the Indian market.

Some of the main advantages of gypsy:

1. Gypsy is a petrol-powered vehicle with a very high acceleration.

2. The power to weight ratio of the vehicle is very good.

3. The cost of maintenance is low, the petrol engine is basically not too cumbersome (compared to diesel).

4. By telling the company, the army has made changes as per their wishes, so it is easy for them to use it. Suppose the car stops due to any damage to any part, it takes a very little time to replace a spare parts.

All these issues apply till 2010. Then the army had more options. Tata Safari, Mahindra Scorpio, Force One etc.

The Army had issued a tender in 2016 for a new SUV. In which Tata Safari came first in all the tests. In 2018, the army has registered a demand for 32,000 Safari vehicles.

And now slowly the old gypsies are going to scrap.
